Learning Forward—from the Beginning
From the beginning, the Sierra Canyon community has always lived by a single shared credo: Go for it.
In 1972, our founders, Mick Horwitz and Howard Wang, envisioned and built a joyous, safe, invigorating summer camp in the northern Los Angeles countryside. They quickly realized that the camp's exceptionally nurturing philosophy could work wonders in an elementary school. Sierra Canyon School was born and thrived for decades, adding a Middle School and burgeoning to nearly 700 students.
In 2005, the School took another bold stride: opening a brand-new Upper Campus on the other side of DeSoto Avenue. Headed by entrepreneurially minded leaders, the School energized students, families, and educators yearning for the chance to innovate.
Today, Sierra Canyon's Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 program draws uncommonly creative thinkers, leaders, and learners from all over Los Angeles. And our trailblazing philosophy—which we call Learning Forward—continues to drive everything we do.
Learning forward ensures that students gain unstoppable momentum to learn and explore, propelling them toward a lifetime of success.
