Sierra Canyon is a selective EK-8,
independent, nondenominational, coeducational day school
in the northern San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
Learning through discovery and school-wide interdisciplinary
adventures, Sierra Canyon students achieve high levels
of academic and personal success within the classrooms
and in the community.
The school has engaged and challenged students for
almost three decades, drawing families from the greater
Los Angeles area including the San Fernando, Santa Clarita,
Simi, and Antelope Valleys, Las Virgenes, and other
outlying communities. The school has grown from 6 to
16 bucolic acres and from 150 to 700 students since
its founding in 1977 and will expand futher in Fall
of 2005 with the creation of the new high school.
Students, parents, and educators praise the school’s
ability to provide academic rigor within an exciting
learning community valuing the individual’s unique
contribution to the process and pleasure of learning.
The U.S. Department of Education recognized Sierra Canyon
as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1990 lauding
the school for its unique approach to instruction, citing
the school-wide annual theme, along with its comprehensive
interdisciplinary approach to core content learning.
Additional accolades were given for the many mixed aged
learning opportunities provided, such as the like-learning
instructional groups and the cohesive, collaborative
relationships between parents, students, and teachers.
The educational philosophy of Sierra Canyon remains
steadfast in its commitment to value and promote the
intellectual, social, and emotional development of the
individual in an environment of mutual respect and appreciation.
The award-winning curriculum continues to delight and
engage students and faculty as each strives for his
or her personal best.
Sierra Canyon’s elementary program challenges
students to achieve their highest goals through small
group instruction. The unique middle school builds on
these skills and provides the necessary blend of challenge
and independence that assures student success and enjoyment
of the process. Eighth graders culminate their middle
school experience through creative, personal presentations.
Sierra Canyon 9-12 continues the pursuit of individual
excellence within the framework of social responsibility
and group discovery learning.
With the blessing of our co-founders and the support
of an already well-established school community, the
secondary school continues the Sierra Canyon tradition
of taking students as far as they can go. The 9-12 program
provides a natural and seamless transition from
an already highly recognized middle school experience
to an equally superb high school program that shares
the most well-established elements of the elementary/middle
school. Like the EK-8, the high school provides
small class size, dynamic teachers, an energized and
diverse community, and interdisciplinary learning. Like
the EK-8, we will provide community service opportunities
that expose students to the city in which we live. Like
the EK-8, we provide superior coaching and athletics
while hosting interscholastic games and competitions.
By building on the strong foundation of Sierra Canyon
EK-8, the secondary school program ensures high
levels of success and development for all its students.
In addition to following our tradition of excellence,
our rigorous academics are taught in both traditional
classroom settings and tutorials. We provide individualized
college counseling using experienced professionals who
have formerly worked in college admissions offices.
Furthermore, we create opportunities for students
to experience the world outside of our community.
Just as Sierra Canyon’s 8th grade graduates have
excelled in secondary school, Sierra Canyon School graduates
will be poised to soar in college and beyond.
