In the Community

Since its founding in 1978, Sierra Canyon School has worked extremely hard to be a good neighbor to the Chatsworth residential and equestrian community in which it is located. From the beginning, the School’s leadership has valued the beautiful, bucolic landscape of its Lower Campus and made every effort to enhance or maintain those qualities. When the new Upper Campus was built to the east of De Soto Avenue, those values were maintained and consideration was given to the neighbors whose homes surround the School.

This Chatsworth community is zoned by the city as an equestrian center and parklands. Horses can be seen daily utilizing the equestrian trail which runs along the perimeter of the Lower Campus, and continues to the north of the Upper Campus. Sierra Canyon built and maintains a portion of that trail. When a sports field and playgrounds were added to the west end of the Lower Campus, requiring a modification to the existing trail, the School’s founding directors consulted with local equestrians to ensure the quality of the new trail.

Sierra Canyon School reaches out to the Chatsworth community in other ways as well. Each year the School thanks police officers and firefighters through special recognition luncheons at the local stations. When the annual School fair and open house is held at the end of April, the entire neighborhood is invited, and those who attend receive complimentary food and beverages. During the summer, scholarships are given for low-income campers to attend Sierra Canyon’s highly acclaimed Day Camp program. Through all of its efforts, Sierra Canyon remains dedicated being a responsible and caring member of the greater community.

The School is working with local authorities to maintain safety standards and is committed to minimizing the impact of traffic, parking, and other issues on its neighbors. To that end, the School has implemented the following:

  • Community Hotline (818) 534-3161 for neighbors to contact with non-emergency issues
  • 24/7 Emergency Contact (818) 968-9792 for issues needing immediate attention outside of regular school hours
  • Third party (non-Sierra Canyon employee or parent) traffic control system
  • Driving and parking directions are posted in detail on the School’s website. This information is also regularly communicated to parents and student drivers.
