Brain and Cognition

Course Description

Taught by a graduate of MIT’s program in Brain and Cognitive Science, this class will explore the different branches of science that study the mind: from the chemical and cellular to the anatomical and from comparative evolution to artificial intelligence. The brain has been a focal point of fascination because it raises (and answers) so many questions about ourselves both practical and philosophical. Students will be introduced each day to one or two major findings then break to do some independent research. Over the course of two weeks, students will produce a poster posing a question of interest to them with some starting points for how to approach the question from the perspective of the different fields we study. Students will also work in small groups to answer a research question using EEG (a device that can measure and record brain waves during different activities), which will give them experience with hypothesis-based inquiry into brain and cognitive function!
