LA Art and Museum Explorations

Course Description

In this weeklong summer camp, students will explore four of Los Angeles’ museums, as well as tour some of the city's most prominent art galleries. Touring these institutions exposes students to world class art and also gives them a chance to learn how to see and to think critically about culture. Additionally, visiting museums give us a chance to have unexpected adventures, explore our city, and make new friends. We will visit The Huntington Library, The Getty Center, The Broad Art Museum, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and then do a Downtown LA gallery tour, including visits to Hauser & Wirth and Night Gallery. Each morning before we venture out, we will discuss what we are going to see, and we will work together to develop some ideas to guide us through the day. Students will learn the core components of Visual Thinking Strategies so that they can navigate the museums in a thoughtful and independent way.

Should you have any questions about the course, please reach out to Mrs. Holmberg at jholmberg@sierracanyonschool.org.

Important Information

Note: As art students travel through museums, they will be exposed to all the artwork that the institution has chosen to display. This means that students may encounter mature content in certain artworks, including the human form in its entirety. Themes, words, gestures and more may contain strong imagery. Seen within the context of museums, it should be understood by students and parents alike that these themes and norms are a part of this learning experience.

Mrs. Holmberg is a Middle and Upper School Visual Art teacher at Sierra Canyon. She received her Masters of Fine Art in Painting from UCLA where she was a teaching fellow. She has taught drawing and painting at CalState Fullerton, Wesleyan University and the Brentwood Art Center in Santa Monica.
