Upper Campus Visual Art Students Visit LACMA

On Thursday, November 14th, second- and third-year sculpture students along with AP/Honors Studio Art students spent the day at LACMA.
Mr. Knepper and Ms. Northup took their Visual Art classes to view the Allure of Matter: Material Art from China. This exhibit is unusual due to the materials utilized in the artworks. The students were amazed at the large piece by Xu Bing that looks like a tiger rug, but it was made completely out of cigarettes. The piece even changed colors as they walked around it. Students also looked at works of art made out of human hair, incense ash, gunpowder, ceramic roof tiles, and a variety of plastics. In addition, the Trailblazers visited the exhibit of Julie Mehtru's large paintings, Betye Saar's assemblage art, and Do Ho Suh's full size apartment replica created in sheer fabric. It was a great day of insightful conversations about art!
