Sierra Canyon Math Team Helps Earn Teacher National Award
Congratulations to SC’s own math teacher and Math Team coach, Chris Tillman, who has been awarded the 2019-20 Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle and High School.
This honor is awarded by the National Mathematical Association of America to teachers “who have done outstanding work to motivate students in mathematics” through their participation and achievement in the American Mathematics Competition series. Mr. Tillman was nominated by several of his students and their parents for the award. Meanwhile, with Mr. Tillman’s support, seven of our Math Team members qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination this year.
Sierra Canyon has seen an increase in its number of students pursuing math or math-related majors in college, and several of those stem from the Sierra Canyon Math Team. Mr. Tillman says, “My goal is to see more students pursue math —advanced math. And I want to motivate and inspire them to realize that this is a profession with wide applications and opportunities. Our competitions provide us that. And, the AMC is an annual tradition.” The School has been supportive of the competitions, too, closing the Founders’ Union and excusing students from classes while they compete. The buzz around the room, while students debate and compare answers after the contests, is energizing.
Mr. Tillman is not the only Edyth May Sliffe Award winner on the Sierra Canyon campus. Dr. Sun Lee received the award in 2018 while working at Mirman School. Dr. Lee now coaches our Middle School Math Team, and the duo of Mr. Tillman and Dr. Lee puts our competitive students in extremely capable hands. Congratulations to all in the competition math program. We wish them the best of luck in the upcoming school year!
