Speech and Debate Thriving this Summer—Join the Ranks!

Over the summer, Sierra Canyon debaters Abdullah Rafique ’21, Gary Wu ’22, Jonathan Pfeffer ’22, and Bodhi Silberling ’23 prepared for and competed in both the Online International British Parliamentary Championship and the Debate Across The Americas Tournament,  as well as competing in SC’s first-ever national Public Debate Program(PDP) tournament.

It has been an unprecedented summer of participation and accomplishment. In the Online International British Parliamentary Championship in June, Sierra Canyon finished 1st place overall among 20 teams from across Europe, and in the Debate Across the Americas Tournament in August, Sierra Canyon defeated the Panama National Team 3 to 0. In the national PDP tournament, Sierra Canyon placed 7th out of 32 teams.

The debate team currently consists of both parliamentary and impromptu events, competing in the High School Public Debate Program and the California High School Speech Association. Parliamentary Debate requires participants to research and prepare arguments, utilizing counter arguments and points of information during rounds. Impromptu debating, commonly categorized under the broad umbrella of Parliamentary Debate, requires debaters to prepare arguments and evidence spontaneously, most commonly between 15 and 30 minutes.

The debate program also hosts the Trailblazer Debate podcast, discussing current events and issues in a debate-like format. The podcast features guests from the Sierra Canyon community engaging on specific topics. The team hopes to see more students from all around our community share their voices on these issues as well.

The Sierra Canyon Speech and Debate Team is looking forward to a prosperous year, and they hope that more students will come along for the ride! Interested students should contact Speech and Debate Coach Jake Meany at jmeany@sierracanyonschool.org, or text Captain and Head of Recruitment Abdullah Rafique at (818) 205-8478. Students may also plan to come to one of their Tuesday and Thursday practicesthe earlier, the better.

We look forward to seeing what the new year has in store for this ambitious group!
