6th Grade Sinks and Swims in Science

The Class of 2027 and Mrs. Tinoco recently closed out their science unit on mass, volume, and density with a real sink or swim experiment.

Students were tasked with creating a boat out of modeling clay. The boats had a given mass, but the students had to adjust the volume of the clay so their boat would float in a bowl or tub of water.

Once the boat was floating, the class was asked to put in pennies (or something similar) one at a time until the boat sank. Then it was time to begin again by adjusting the volume and continuing with multiple trials.

The fun doesn’t stop there—6th Grade will now begin to study forces of gravity and air resistance. We look forward to seeing their next experiment!
