The Lower School Green Team recently explored the power of the sun by turning everyday pizza boxes into solar ovens.
To kick off a year of hands-on sustainability projects, students lined pizza boxes with aluminum foil and created reflective flaps to direct sunlight inside. They then added the ingredients for s’mores—graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows—and headed outside to put their creations to the test. Using only the sun’s energy, students watched as their treats warmed before enjoying the results of their experiment.
“I was amazed by how quickly the sun melted the chocolate and heated the marshmallow,” shared Ava L. ‘33.
Available to students in Grades 3–6, Green Team is a perennial favorite in Sierra Canyon’s Afterschool Enrichment Program, which gives students opportunities to explore interests beyond the school day. Throughout the year, members plant and tend the school garden, create artwork inspired by nature, and lead sustainability initiatives that encourage fellow students to care for their campus and the environment.
The solar oven experiment gave Green Team members a fun introduction to solar energy and set the stage for a year of learning, experimenting, and exploring the world around them.
