Sierra Canyon’s Lower and Middle School Math Teams have had a strong start this year, with early competition success and many more contests ahead.

Brenton D. '32, Frank M. '32, Grayson C. '32, William C. '33, Jason W. '31, and Marco L. '31 all took part in Mustang Math Mania on Saturday, September 26. Jason and Marco placed second overall in their 8th Grade division, and Brenton, Frank, Grayson, and William submitted several intricate mathematical contest proofs before the competition. Results for those proofs are pending, given the recency of the contest and the volume of work students were required to write!

Several Middle School team members maintained the momentum on Thursday, October 1, with Mathleague.org’s Number Sense Challenge, a weekly 10-minute blitz of 80 questions administered online. Students stayed afterward for a mini-lesson designed to strengthen competitors’ number sense by reviewing select problems from the contest.

Students in our 5th-8th Grade Math Teams, including the 22 students enrolled in the Middle School Competitive Math elective, have also begun competing in an ongoing bracket-style math tournament, AreteLabs, featuring both individual and team-based competition that will run into November. On Friday, October 2, all teams took part in their first Math Madness AreteLabs contests, and Sierra Canyon enjoyed a clean sweep of head-to-head competition against other schools.

The strong start follows an impressive summer for several Sierra Canyon mathletes. Brother and sister Axel S. '38 and Zoe S. '36 took first and second place in the IXL Math-a-Palooza challenge, answering more than 20,000 questions correctly in just a few weeks. Jacob G. '36 finished third with more than 3,000 questions answered correctly in a summer slam of math that featured more than 100 Lower Campus students.

Lower Campus Math Teams Captain and all-star William C. '33 also earned an invitation from CML based on his high score in a Spring 2026 contest to attend a competitive math camp, where he strengthened his skills even further. Although he is a Lower Campus student, William regularly joins Upper Campus Math Team members for contests and practices.

Another IXL Leaderboard event will begin on October 10 and run through December 6, recognizing outstanding achievement by both individuals and classes.

If your child is interested in trying out Math Team or participating in a contest, please contact Tom Keller, Director of Teaching and Learning, at [email protected]. With more competitions ahead, there is still time to get involved in Math Teams on both the Lower and Upper Campuses. Upcoming contests include Noetic Learning, Beestar, Team Math Kangaroo, and state qualifiers. Contests begin as early as Kindergarten, offering a great experience for curious problem-solvers of all ages.
