Welcome, Dr. De Sal

Dr. Julianne (Jan) De Sal will join Sierra Canyon as Director of Arts, PreK-12, for the 19-20 school year.

In addition to teaching theater classes, Dr. De Sal will oversee arts faculty in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools and will help originate innovative and engaging programming in music, dance, theatre, and visual arts.
 
Dr. De Sal, is known for building and administering arts programs of excellence in independent schools. For the past four years, she has served as the Director of Visual and Performing Arts at Colorado Academy in Denver where she created Conservatory programs in Theatre and Dance, worked with Visual Arts faculty to develop an academically noted Portfolio program, and led vocal and instrumental music teachers to re-envision the school’s extensive recital offerings.
 
Prior to her position in Colorado, Dr. De Sal was the Director of Arts at Viewpoint School in Calabasas, where her work was instrumental in leading the school to be honored in 2005 with the BRAVO Award for Excellence in Arts Education from the Music Center of Los Angeles. In 2007, she was one of four educators selected as individual BRAVO finalists for her Conservatory training programs offering students focused arts instruction within an academic environment.
 
Dr. De Sal also directed arts programs at Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena and was a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay and California State University in Los Angeles. She holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Rhode Island, a M. A. in Theater and a B.A. in Theatre, English, and Education from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She also has an extensive background in dance as a performer and a choreographer, and she is a Spoken Word poet.
