US Students In Seattle for SDLC Conference

Six SC Upper School students traveled to Seattle on Wednesday, December 4th to participate in the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) with chaperone and Upper Campus English instructor, Mario Garcia.
The National Association of Independent Schools puts the conference on annually in December, bringing together 1,600 students to discuss issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion through the lens of learning leadership skills. Read all about the testaments of transformation from our students below:

I have never been with any group more mature, socially conscious, and empathetic than my ‘home group’ of high school students. The atmosphere surrounding the conference as a whole is massively powerful, rivaling any experience I’ve had to date. I’m confident that my worldview will be stretched and challenged in ways it has not previously been as a direct result of meeting the people I have met and forming the connections I have formed. I had never been in a group of people that represents such diverse and unique backgrounds. I felt like as a part of many minority groups, I reflected on the issue of diversity enough. But I was mistaken. During this conference, I was challenged by questions one after another that actually impact our everyday life in every way possible. SDLC is eye-opening in the most complex way and amazing in the simplest manner.  Jonathan Li '21

Wow! This is a whole new world, my eyes have widened, and I am inspired by hearing other people’s stories that I didn’t think can happen, though I can relate too. This conference/event has changed my view on the world.  Lawrence Bonner '22

Knowing that there are so many other individuals who share similar experiences and scenarios with me makes me feel less alone. SDLC has truly been an eye-opening learning experience that has changed my view on the way I perceive the world. Emily Antebi '20

SDLC changed my perspective on life. Hearing other’s stories and struggles makes me realize two things; As vague as it sounds, love your TRUE self and be unapologetic in anything you do. Life is BEAUTIFUL, make mistakes, grow through what you go through.  Journey Carter '21

I have never seen so many people from different backgrounds in one place, especially people my age. I have met great people from all over the nation, and I am looking forward to working with them during the conference. Em Chong '21
