National Latin Exam: The Results Are In!

As reported in the March 27th Trailblazer, even amid the coronavirus quarantine, the Sierra Canyon classical scholars are keeping their knowledge strong!

Recall on Tuesday, March 17th, Latin students from both campuses took part in the National Latin Exam. We are now happy to report the superlative results of our students’ efforts.

In the Lower School, 6th grade scholars had three perfect papers: Nikhil McGowan, Kellen Oliver, and Danny Maya. In addition, 18 students received a purple ribbon for an outstanding score, and 13 received above-average certificates. Students attended a Zoom celebration and cheered on their classmates’ success! From the Upper Campus, 68 students took the exam online, and 38 won awards, including 1 Cum Laude certificate, 13 Magna Cum Laude certificates, 12 Maxima Cum Laude silver medals, and 11 Summa Cum Laude gold medals. Among the 11 Magna Cum Laude medals were two students from Honors Latin IV, Zachary Anderson ’22, and George Khouri ’21.  Both students are now eligible for the Maureen O’Donnell Oxford Classical Dictionary award.

Mrs. Anderson and Ms. Myers are exceptionally proud not only of their students’ accomplishments but the dedication and resilience they showed in taking this exam under adverse conditions. Participants were slated to take the exam two days before the School closed, and with very short notice, transitioned and self-managed successfully to take it online.

Congratulations to our impressive Latin scholars and faculty members, Stephanie Anderson, Tom Fennell, and Jacque Myers.
