Sierra Canyon Math Team Students Qualify for AIME and Shine

Seven SC students earned invitations to the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination this year.

Alex Bai ’24, Youbin Cho ’21, Phillip Miao ’22, Otto Rahmel ’22, Gowri Vadmal ’20, Wendy Wang ’23, and Shuming Zhao ’23 all qualified by scoring in the top 2.5% for grades 8-10, and in the top 5% for grades 11-12 in the United States on the nationally recognized American Mathematics Competition. Math Team Coach Chris Tillman says, “Considering that mainly competitive math students from schools around the country take this competition, this is a remarkable feat.”

The AIME took place on March 11th, and the results have now been released. On this three-hour, fifteen-question math exam, written to weed out the top of the top math students in the country, Sierra Canyon’s Alex Bai, Youbin Cho, and Phillip Miao finished in the top 15%! The USA Math Olympiad was canceled this year due to the pandemic, and that was a potential advancement from the AIME, depending on composite AMC plus AIME scores. We congratulate all seven of these competitors on their remarkable achievements this year!
