Speech and Debate Celebrates a Successful Season

Despite the challenges of quarantine, the Speech and Debate team fought hard to create a way to practice and compete in tournaments that moved online.

The 2020 season continued against the odds, and Coach Jake Meany organized the first Online National Public Debate Program Championship. There were 32 teams from five states competing. This was only the second event Sierra Canyon had in this debate format, and students did exceptionally well. Abdullah Rafique ’21 and Bodhi Silberling ’23 placed seventh out of the 32 teams. Gary Wu ’22 placed 5th out of nearly 100 students at the tournament. Further congratulations are due to Abdullah, who was a finalist in the state qualifiers for the Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

A great many thanks are due to Coach Jake for his innovation in the face of adversity to keep this year’s team thriving. He plans on continuing to work with his students this summer.  Additionally, he will be offering several summer workshops on leadership and speech and debate to both Middle School and Upper School students. Keep an eye on your inbox for the upcoming Summer Programs email for more information.
