Lower School Distance-Learning Profiles: The Odebunmi Family

This week in the Trailblazer, we ask the Odebunmi Family to share a little about their experience with Distance Learning on the Lower Campus.

What are the names, grades, and teachers of your distance learners at home?
Kemi Odebunmi – 2nd Grade/2C
Teachers: Ms. Beard & Ms. Chlowitz

Chidi Odebunmi – 4th Grade/4C
Teachers: Mrs. Chan & Ms. Sneed

Do you have any tips/strategies that have worked for your family for distance learning?
We try to get all their assignments done right after school, and if there is any homework that needs to be printed, we try to have it printed out and ready the night before.

What are some challenges or bumps in the road you have experienced, and how is your family dealing with this?
One of the challenges we have been experiencing is navigating the kids' breaks. Especially their lunch break, because they have them at different times.

Are there any especially memorable/engaging lessons your learners have experienced thus far?
Chidi '29 enjoyed working on the California salt map project. Kemi '31 is enjoying the "How to" writing projects.

What are good ways for families to keep in touch with one another right now in the absence of in-person learning/birthday parties, etc.? Since March, what has been the most fun/inventive way you have maintained connection with your own family or school friends?
Friends and family text threads have been our favorite way to keep in touch, along with Zoom playdates. Our kids also keep in touch with their cousins quite a bit on Xbox talk parties, and we've recently tried out the app Marco Polo.

With so much family time, what has been one of your favorite moments/activities, either planned or unplanned, that has come out of the time at home since March?
One great thing was having plenty of time to settle into our new place. But, one of our favorite times was an impromptu weekend trip to Santa Barbara. It was great to get away and have a change of scenery.

Are there any positives that have come out of your quarantine routine that you will keep in place for your family when things go back to "normal"?
As funny as this sounds, grocery delivery. It's been something we've really enjoyed and may plan to keep in place ;)

If the November 2020 Odebunmis could give the March 2020 Odebunmis once piece of advice, what would it be?
Pace yourself . . . take things one day at a time and enjoy and appreciate each day.

Thank you to the Odebunmi Family for giving us a look into their daily Distance-Learning lifestyle!
