Nurse Holly Shares Vaccination Experience

This week, The Trailblazer is proud to share Lower School Nurse Holly Calig’s first-hand account of her experience receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

December 20, 2020, was a monumental day when I received the first of a two-part COVID-19 vaccine. It flooded me with emotion, knowing this was the beginning of protecting the lives of the people we care about and of economic recovery for our world. I also felt great sadness, knowing so many people (365,000 and climbing) in our country alone will never have the opportunity to get vaccinated. On a personal level, it gives me hope to spend time with my five grandchildren, Sunday dinners with my family, traveling with friends, and sharing those moments that enrich our souls. I will once again be able to be the nurse that was forever part of my being, consoling tearful students, pulling out a tooth without fear of spreading virus particles, and being able to resume that personal touch that is so important.

The side-effects were minimal, and I welcomed them. To me, it represented my immune system at work!

The vaccine is not a “get out of jail free card.” We have a long way to go in ensuring our community reaches herd immunity. Wearing a face covering in public places, social distancing, staying home when you feel ill, and practicing good hygiene will be necessary for some time.

It is important to discuss with your healthcare provider any concerns you have about the vaccine. We are in this together.

Thank you, Nurse Holly, not only for sharing your experience, but also for all the healing work you do on campus and in our community!
