On Wednesday, February 10, ten 6th Grade finalists participated in the annual Spelling Bee on the Lower Campus via Zoom.
The contestants all acquitted themselves admirably, taking to the online format well. After the Bee's conclusion, an error in judging came to light, so the final three contestants (Coco Svatek, Thomas McCurley, and Malaya Rogers) were invited back for a "Spell Off" on Tuesday morning. After 30 minutes of sensational spelling and the most rounds ever experienced in any Sierra Canyon School Spelling Bee, Thomas McCurley correctly spelled the championship word: coagulate. Malaya Rogers was a close second.
Hats off to Thomas, who will represent Sierra Canyon at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee. Malaya will be the alternate for the event.
Congratulations to all our 6th Grade finalists: Lucy Feldman, Teddy Pakkala, Thomas McCurley, Kenneth Smith, Coco Svatek, Malaya Rogers, Jayden Pollon, Marley Rambert, Cali Suzuki, and Phoenix Downing.
