SC's Speech and Debate Team is on Top of Their Game

A year of COVID-19 protocols can’t keep Sierra Canyon’s Speech and Debate team quiet.

Coached by Jake Meany, Speech and Debate recently had an excellent showing in the Online Public Debate Program Tournament. Tournament competitors represented 12 schools from across the country, consisting of 32 teams and 91 students.

SC took 1st place for Top School at the tournament, and individual team members won the following awards:

Team Awards:
7th place: Bruno Krushnir ’23 and Nicholas Pham ‘24
4th place: Jonathan Pfeffer ’22 and Jaden Strommer ‘21

Speaker Awards:
8th: Gary Wu ‘22
4th: Abdullah Rafique ‘21
1st (and winner of the coveted tournament gavel): Jonathan Pfeffer ‘22

And that’s not all! So far this year Sierra Canyon has competed in eight National Parliamentary Tournaments and two International British Parliamentary Tournaments and earned:

• 16 Team Awards (including nine in the top four teams of the tournament)
• 24 Speaker Awards (18 in the top ten speakers of the tournament)
• 10 School Awards (nine of which are either 1st or 2nd place)

* Tournaments have between 70-150 competitors, with 30-50 teams representing eight states and 30 schools.

Even more interesting to note is that over half of the SC Speech and Debate team is in their first year of debate and are regularly debating students who have competed since middle school and have between three to seven years of experience.

It’s clear that Sierra Canyon is NUMBER ONE when it comes to Speech and Debate. If you don’t think so, then we dare you to argue with them!
