Ars Poetica Assembly Returns to Upper Campus

Throughout the school year, Middle School teachers in the Sierra Canyon English Department teach numerous works of literature, and the second-semester poetry unit has become a significant pillar of the Middle School English experience.

In years past, Middle School students have selected a specific poet, leading students to research the writer and recite one of the literary figure's known poems. Middle School teachers chose approximately twelve students to recite their poems in what has become a wonderful tradition on the Upper Campus:  the illustrious Ars Poetica assembly. Sadly, the Sierra Canyon community was unable to celebrate our assembly that revels in the beauty of poetry during the spring of 2020.

However, this year, the English Department is proud to bring back a new version of Ars Poetica. Since the student body could not meet as a collective group, the English Department decided to film 12 selected 7th and 8th Grade students who wrote original poems in their English classes. English teacher Mario Garcia volunteered to film the talented poets.

"I wanted to celebrate the original poems by our Middle School students, but I also thought it would be fun to have each student recite their work using numerous locations throughout the campus as their backdrop. We are so happy to be back at school; it only seemed fitting to allow our beautiful campus to be a part of the assembly," said Mr. Garcia. The program helped reestablish a positive spirit towards on-campus activities. "I am so grateful that Sierra Canyon encourages and provides a platform for students to celebrate and perform their art," said 8th Grade poet Willow Stromer. Congratulations to our young Sierra Canyon poets!
