Wendy Wang ’23 Wins National Recognition for Girls in Mathematics

Wendy was identified as among the top five girls in the Southern California/Nevada region at the AMC 10B contest and was named a Two Sigma Certificate of Excellence winner. The award is sponsored by Two Sigma, a financial investment company that uses mathematically based artificial intelligence, technology, algorithms, and data analysis to render its strategies. Wendy placed in the top 2% among all girls in the nation and, outside of this contest, has helped Sierra Canyon throughout the school year to solidify numerous victories for our highly competitive Math Team.

 

Wendy joins the ranks of several very successful young women coming out of Sierra Canyon’s competition Math Team program who later entered fields of mathematics for their collegiate and professional careers: Mariah Ewing ’16 was captain of the Math Team, attended Harvey Mudd College, majored in Engineering, and served as Head Shop Proctor there for two years. Emily Zhai ’18 was also captain, attends Johns Hopkins University, studies in the Applied and Computational Mathematics Program, has a dual major in computer science, and is starting graduate work in software engineering. Laura DeFalco ’20 studies pure mathematics at UCLA, a top-ten Math Department in the country. Gowri Vadmal ’20, captain for two years, attends Stanford University, and studies in their Mathematical and Computational Science Program, ranked in the top three internationally. Youbin Cho ’21, graduating captain, is attending Carnegie Mellon University in the fall and is planning to study in the Discrete Mathematics and Logic concentration of their mathematics program, also one of the top programs in the country.
