World Language Honor Societies Induct New Members

Our World Language Department has been celebrating its scholars recently as students have been inducted to the French, Latin, and Spanish Honor Societies.

French
On Thursday, May 6, 2021, the following new candidates were honored for their excellence and inducted into the French National Honor Society: Aidan Aitchison, Neal Basin,  Samantha Bolotsky, Faith Snyder, Jiayi (Irene) Song, Kourtney Williams, and Angela Zhong. Graduating seniors were also recognized for their time and effort put toward the Society. The virtual ceremony was conducted over Zoom by the current Society officers: Rayan Ansari (Co-President), Audrey Young (Co-President), Samantha Hariz (Vice President), Hannah Gansert (Secretary), Avonley Kliewer (Treasurer), and Brenna Bruggeman (Publicity Chair). Once everyone gathered in the Zoom room, officers commenced by giving a short history of the French National Honor Society. Then the current and very talented secretary, Hannah Gansert, sang the French National Anthem, La Marseillaise. Next, officers inducted the new members as each one received their certificate and lit their candle. All new members recited L’homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux, which translates to, The man who knows two languages is worth two.

To qualify for the French National Honor Society, students must have maintained a grade no lower than an A- in French class for the previous three semesters and no grade lower than a B- in any other classes. After the new members were inducted, graduating seniors received their certificates from their parents. It was a beautiful ceremony, especially under virtual circumstances.

  • You Bin Cho, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Nicholas Kanji, Boston College
  • George Khouri, University of Illinois
  • Aara Nanavaty, Claremont McKenna College
  • Ariana Stiles, College of William and Mary
Presiding over the ceremony were Latin teacher and Honor Society Faculty Advisor Steve Faulkner, Chapter President George Khouri, Chapter President Ariana Stiles, Chapter Secretary Aara Nanavaty, and Chapter Officer Avonley Kliewer.  On behalf of all Latin scholars worldwide, we say gaudeamus igitur!
