Mobile Application Development Class Blends Coding and Design

This semester, the Video Game Creation class, led by Upper Campus Computer Science Chair Javy Martinez, transitioned to Mobile Application Development.

In this course, coding intersects with design, creating a perfect blend that allows 8th and 9th Grade students to develop apps for iPhones and iPads. Whether using a Mac or a PC, the unique aspect of this class is that students can create their apps in a virtual Mac environment. This gives students the capability to work on their app from any device, anywhere, anytime.

Instruction for this course is extremely hands-on. From day one, students learn how to make apps by doing just that. First, the class learned the fundamentals of the app environment, followed by the coding portion. Students went through a 'coding boot camp' during the first semester, ensuring much of the material was already familiar. Approximately every two to three weeks, students will have a new app completely designed and ready to use with new and more complex topics introduced each new session. By the semester's end, these new app developers will cover everything from a simple age converter to an egg timer to Tic-Tac-Toe. The course culminates with a capstone project as students will create an original app and present it to the class, detailing its functionality to their peers.

We look forward to seeing what these budding developers come up with this semester!
