Senior Holds Discussion After UC Student Survey

As part of SC Mental Health Week, senior Eugene Reicher '22 and the Pre-Med Club recently held a special presentation for students.

The video presentation outlined mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Viewers got tips on recognizing these conditions and heard language to help describe and identify what sufferers may be going through. Although everyone is different, the video also explained what symptoms might indicate it's time for yourself or a loved one to seek guidance from a professional.

Below, Eugene discusses why he thought it was important to talk about these issues with his peers.

Prompted by my Research Methods class, I came up with an idea for a study on the effects of COVID school closure on student health attitudes and behaviors. I designed a questionnaire, surveyed the Upper Campus student population both before and soon after SC reopening, statistically analyzed their responses, and prepared a manuscript for publication. In all of this, I had amazing support and guidance from Dr. Ricci.

One of the surprising findings in this project was that while school reopening improved some measures of students' physical health, there was no effect on mental health parameters. Therefore, I decided to develop a webpage and a companion Pre-Med club video presentation to raise mental health awareness, in conjunction with SC Mental Health Week.
