SC Takes 3rd in Top Division at Honors Math Contest

Congratulations to the Math Team on taking 3rd place in the top division of the San Diego Honors Math Contest!

Recently, 15 Sierra Canyon students in Grades 8 through 12 made their way to San Diego for the weekend trip and competition. Finally getting their first in-person travel contest in over two years, the team came in strong, ready to compete, and solved a multitude of problems involving number theory, combinatorics, functional equations, and geometry, among many other areas of mathematics. Having finished highly in the B Division in recent years, the SC team elevated to the top division with no regret. Congratulations to Katie Anderson ’24, Alex Bai ’24, Stone Ding ’24, Rose Domzalski ’24, Ethan Gao ’25, Eleanor Li ’23, Miranda Li ’25, Devon Lu ’23, Shin Masada ’26, Nikhil McGowan ’26, Phillip Miao ’22, Wendy Wang ’23, Youyou Xie ’24, Tiger Zhang ’25, and Shuming Zhao ’23 on their superior performance!

Three Trailblazers also earned individual recognition from UC San Diego’s Math Department, which wrote and hosted the annual competition. Phillip Miao earned 14th place out of 140 students, Alex Bai earned 10th place, and Tiger Zhang finished 2nd overall!

In addition to the 3-hour long competition, which included a grueling multiple-choice section with a penalty for incorrect answers and a rigorous and challenging proof round, the team had time for bonding and non-academic activities while on the trip. A great way to cap off a superb year of math competitions by our SC Math Team!
