Pre-K is Eating Their Way Through the ABC's

Pre-K has been celebrating letters AND Hispanic Heritage Month in the yummiest of ways... by eating their way through the alphabet!

This week the students learned all about the letter T and had the opportunity to make delicious tortillas. The class read Round is a Tortilla by Roseanne Greenfield Thong and enjoyed learning about all the shapes you can find in the world around us. This book has lots of words in Spanish, perfect for reinforcing what Pre-K is learning in Spanish. The students were so excited to hunt for round campanas, square ventanas, and of course, triangle sandias, and oval huevos in our class play kitchen!

To begin the cooking lesson, the students carefully measured and poured the masa and water and took turns mixing the ingredients in the bowl. They used each of their senses to describe how the dough felt, smelled, and looked. Next, each student had a scoop of dough to roll into a ball. After lots of rolling and squishing, the students were ready to use their muscles and the tortilla press to make a round tortilla! They all loved using the press, and the classrooms were filled with squeals of excitement as each child lifted the press to see their round tortilla.

The grown-ups took over at this point and put the tortillas on the hot griddle. Students loved watching the raw dough transform into a bubbly and delicious tortilla. All three classrooms smelled amazing, and the Class of 2036 could hardly wait to taste their creations. Luckily they were ready just in time for afternoon snack!
