The Upper Campus Gratitude Tree

The DEI, Wellness, and Arts Departments worked together on a recent project that combined the focus of each area.

Dr. Serena Hobson, our Director of Wellness, created the idea of a Gratitude Tree to be displayed during finals week at the Upper Campus. Dr. Hobson remarked, "I wanted the students to have reminders of the things they enjoy, the things they are grateful for, and the things they are positive about."

Ms. Fahmy, Dr. Hobson, and Ms. Sloan, Chair of the Arts Department, drafted, cut, and pasted the tree outside Dr. Hobson's office at the Upper Campus Library. They, along with students Heaven H. '23, Uma D. '23, Evin J. '23, and Christa K. '25 cut and placed the paper leaves on the tree. Each leaf found on the Gratitude Tree was written on by a student in Grades 7-12 with endearing words such as:
  • "I am grateful for the Peak Week trip to NYC."
  • "I am grateful for Head of School Jim Skrumbis."
  • "I'm grateful for baseball."
  • "I am grateful for my biology class."
  • "I am for my painting and drawing classes."
  • "I am grateful for my friends and family.”
With the placement in the Library, the hope is that students will take a break from studying, read the leaves for a moment, and walk away with smiles on their faces. We look forward to seeing how the Gratitude Tree evolves and changes overtime.
