UC French Students Celebrate King's Day

This month, French classes on the Upper Campus celebrated Epiphany—a holiday in January observed around the world with a wide array of customs.

In France, people celebrate Epiphany with the Galette des Rois or King's Cake. To share in the tradition, Upper Campus French classes enjoyed a lively celebration relishing delicious homemade galettes baked by Deirdre Delany (Sinead '25, Hannah '23, Ray '19) and Martin Heierling (Graelyn '26). In each class, the student who found the “fève" (King) inside the cake was crowned King or Queen for the day.

According to Madame du Cos de la Hitte, "This celebratory tradition is a favorite in French classes and is eagerly anticipated each year. Students commented on how delicious the galettes were, and everyone was hoping to find the fève."

Classroom traditions like this remind us that there is more to learning French than language and vocabulary. Experiencing rich traditions in this way allows Sierra Canyon students to embrace French culture beyond grammar and really get a TASTE of what it's like to be French!
