Student Spotlight: Becky L. '25 Fights to Cure Cancer

Last weekend, Sierra Canyon 10th Grade student, Becky L. '25, was named one of the Los Angeles Student Visionaries of the Year by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in their 2023 Student Visionaries campaign.

Student Visionaries is a seven-week campaign to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Becky organized a team called Change Cancer's Course to participate in this year's program, which included students from Sierra Canyon and the Webb Schools. Becky praised her team's "hearts of gold and drive to help people," giving a special shoutout to her fellow Trailblazers and team members: Sienna M. '25, Bianca C. '25, and Sienna M. '25. In the end, Change Cancer's Course set a new fundraising record for the LLS Los Angeles region, which earned Becky and her co-candidate the 2023 Los Angeles Student Visionaries of the Year title.

Becky and her team raised $512,338 - a record for the Los Angeles campaign's 6-year history. Becky fundraised tirelessly by meeting with the boards of corporations and companies, sending out emails to her and her parents' contacts, and delivering pitches at many social events. As the first Sierra Canyon candidate, she shared, "I am honored to have represented Sierra Canyon School. My team and I hope that, in turn, we have brought the School honor." Overall, the 25 candidate teams raised an outstanding $1,631,669 to support cancer patients and families.

The Executive Director of LLS Los Angeles, Shannon Sullivan, reached out to Mr. Skrumbis after the incredible results of Change Cancer’s Course in this year’s campaign. Ms. Sullivan made note of the tremendous growth she had witnessed in Becky through this experience, "[Becky] learned professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management through the Student Visionaries program. She has been an incredible representative of the Sierra Canyon community and a fearless leader in the fight against cancer."

As a candidate, Becky's goal was to inspire others around her, classmates and adults alike, to help those who cannot help themselves. Survivors who spoke at an LLS event last year motivated her to participate and emphasized that young people like her can impact this world.

Becky describes Sierra Canyon as "the most accepting community ever." As a result, she felt comfortable approaching people and requesting donations. After seven weeks and over 100 hours of community service, she says that volunteering was a fantastic experience and is very proud of herself and her team.

Congratulations to Becky, who has embodied the spirit of community and giving at Sierra Canyon with inspiring dedication and collaborative success. We are incredibly proud of and excited for her receiving such a prestigious honor.
