State Team Competition at MathCounts

On Saturday, March 31st, Sierra Canyon placed 4th in the state team competition at MathCounts, held at California Baptist University, Riverside.

Students Alex Bai ’24, Phillip Miao ’22, Otto Rahmel ’22, and Grant Yabuki ’22 represented SC.

Fifty teams and about 200 students from Southern California attended this year’s contest.  While Sierra Canyon had individual students progress to the state level before, this was the first year the school had a team of four in the state competition.

“I’m so proud that Sierra Canyon achieved fourth place in the state “team” competition. It reflects the strength of all four of our competitors and their dedication to solving complex problems under pressure,” said Ray Riley, team coach.

The host of the event, California Baptist University, College of Engineering offered $10,000 scholarships to the members of the top four teams, and the top 16 individual winners of the state. All four SC students won this scholarship (available upon graduation), in addition to their trophies.
