SC Students Excel in the American Mathematics Competition

Seven Sierra Canyon students participated and dominated in the 2018 American Mathematics Competition.

Alexandre Filho ’18, Pierre Baza ’21, Zach Mazaheri ’21, and Otto Rahmel ’22 all placed in the top 10%, with Otto competing above grade level in this Upper School contest. Math team captain Emily Zhai ’18 placed in the top 6%, Youbin Cho ’21 finished in the top 3%, and Phillip Miao ’22 rounded out the team honors, placing in the top 1.5% worldwide.

Only 492 students in the world out of 31,757 participants placed higher in this contest. Phillip’s performance earned him an invitation to the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), which is one step away from the Math Olympiad. For four years in a row, a Sierra Canyon student has qualified for the AIME.
