Summer Practice Adds Up to Math Team Success

Enthusiastic about last year’s achievements and aiming to build on them for this upcoming school year, several members of Sierra Canyon’s Math Team met with Coach Tillman regularly for practices.

The Middle School Team met for four hours a week, introduced several new 6th and 7th grade members to the team, and studied a wide variety of techniques, with an emphasis on counting arrangements of objects and probability. The Upper School Team also met for four hours a week and spent more than six hours a week independently pursuing assigned reading and problems. Captain Gowri Vadmal said, “I valued the summer practices so much because they helped provide structure and contact hours with my coach and teammates. This will make us advance and grow stronger.” Throughout the summer, the team was drilled with California Math League questions and spent a lot of time studying contest geometry—completing most of two separate geometry contest prep books.

The Middle and Upper School Math Teams are both eager for the upcoming competition series. The Middle School Team is aiming for a repeat visit to the State Competition in MATHCOUNTS this year, and the Upper School Team is preparing both for traveling contests and for the nationally recognized American Mathematics Competition. Last year, the Varsity Team was selected to participate in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament in Boston, and they hope to attend another prestigious, out-of-state competition again this year. With the many extra hours of summer practice and commitment, the 2018-2019 Sierra Canyon Math Team seasons are sure to be one to remember!
