Dylan Ochoa ’24 makes history with Team USA

While most students were catching up on homework, rest, or social events after the first official week of school, Dylan Ochoa ’24 was in Cebu, Philippines competing on Team USA at the 2018 World Robot Olympiad.

Dylan and his teammates built, programmed and tested an autonomous robot, earning them 3rd in their competition and putting the United States on the map for Robotics.

According to Dylan, the entire experience mirrored the traditional Olympic Games. All teams participated in the Opening Ceremony where competitors marched in with the flag of their nation surrounded by spectators and families in the audience. The hotel reflected the the Olympic Village experience and allowed students from all nations to network together and participate in ‘Amazing Race’ style activities. Dylan’s team won 1st prize and consisted of players from Italy, Denmark, Philippines, and Romania. The conclusion of the games brought the Closing Ceremony marked with a traditional Filipino feast, student performances, and medal presentations.
