Sierra Canyon Upper Campus Gets eSports Team

Students and visitors to the Upper Campus have probably noticed some exciting updates to the Publications Room on the first floor of the main building.

New, state-of-the-art computers and monitors now line the walls in addition to sleek new ambient lighting. While you will still find Newspaper, Yearbook, and Animation classes meeting here during the day, after-school this room is reserved for the latest addition to the Trailblazers family: the eSports Team.

Upper School instructors and STEM field coaches, Julie Ahring (Math) and Bruce Buenaventura (Science) along with IT Department members, Ryan Chapman and Julian Evjen, will begin meetings with the new roster of players next week in preparation for the upcoming fall season of the High School eSports League beginning on October 1st. Teams within the league compete with teams from all over the United States. Sierra Canyon players will compete in three games (all under “TEEN” rating):
  1. Rocket League
  2. League of Legends
  3. Fortnite
According to Associate Head of School, Deborah Monroe, “The eSports industry is booming and the benefits to students who participate on a competitive eSport team are more extensive than one might initially think. At the high school level, eSports combines the well-respected values of working with a team: collaboration, strategic thinking and leadership with STEAM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) in a fun, social setting that helps foster school spirit.”

Watch the Trailblazer for upcoming tournament announcements as we cheer our cutting-edge gamers on to SC victory!
