Math Team Selected for Prestigious Princeton Competition

Once again, the SC Math Team makes impressive news as they have been selected to travel to Princeton University in November to compete in the Princeton University Mathematics Competition (PUMaC).

Based on our performance in last year's American Mathematics Competition and on our results at the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament, the Sierra Canyon Math Team was selected by the PUMaC organizers to compete in the 2018 competition. PUMaC is an annual mathematics contest for high school students around the world written and hosted by Princeton University students.

This year, the PUMaC will be held at Princeton University on November 17th. Eight representatives from Sierra Canyon’s Math Team will be attending including Gowri Vadmal ’20, Milad Jalala ’20, Youbin Cho ’21, Zack Mazaheri ’21, Pierra Baza ’21, Gary Chen ’21, Phillip Miao ’22, and Alex Bai ’24. Each student will choose 2 of the 4 contests: algebra, combinatorics, geometry, or number theory, and they are given an hour to complete 8 problems in each category. There are also two team components of the competition: the Team Round and the Power Round. The Team Round is approximately 17 questions in 35 minutes, and all eight team members work on them together. The competition is a full day affair, with lots of math activities between rounds and scoring.
