California Missions Come to Life for 4th Grade Students

Last week, to culminate a unit on the first explorers to set foot on California’s coast and the development of the 21 California missions, the 4th grade students embarked upon their first overnight field trip to Solvang.

Together they explored the Santa Inez and La Purisima missions and the Santa Barbara Presidio. With docents dressed in historical clothing, they experienced the mission’s time period come to life. Favorite moments included watching the docents turn the wool of the sheep into yarn and witnessing the blacksmith make a nail out of heated metal.

Along with the tours, students enjoyed seeing the quaint Danish town of Solvang. This historic town, complete with its many windmills and unique tourist shops, left the group with the sense that they were walking down the streets of Denmark.
