Lower Campus Associate Teacher

Sierra Canyon seeks Lower School candidates for the Associate Teacher position who will work with the classroom lead teacher in specific grade levels, PreK – Grade 5, to maintain a learning environment that supports the Mission and Core Values of the School, beginning in August, 2024.  Candidates should possess a genuine interest in pursuing a career in private independent school education and have the experiential and/or educational background that demonstrates this.  If you would like a better understanding about the advantages of working in a private independent school, review this brief article here.  This is a full-time position and boasts a competitive salary with full benefits. 



DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR EXPECTATIONS
 

This position includes and not limited to the following expectations:   

  • Work with teachers and staff to ensure the greatest academic, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development as possible for all students.   
 
  • Actively teach with a full understanding of Sierra Canyon’s core and affective curriculum in mind, reinforcing the School’s programs like Singapore Math, Writers Workshop, Fundations, Guided Reading, our social emotional learning, et al.
 
  • Communicate to community members with dignity and respect, maintaining a professional attitude and confidentiality as necessary.  
 
  • Provide instructional and clerical support for the lead classroom teacher.  
 
  • Support and assist children in learning class material under the lead teacher's direction and guidance including whole and small group, and one-on-one instruction.
 
  • Lead class when asked as directed by the lead teacher and administration.   
 
  • Provide students with personalized support and attention in different frameworks common to the academic day including group, small and individual classes and centers.  
 
  • Become familiar with the pedagogy, materials, and resources that the school provides.   
 
  • Faithfully and knowledgably report on student growth and challenges, observing any concerns or praise that is noteworthy and necessary to assure student progress including those reports that require discretion and sensitivity.   
 
  • Supervise students at all times of the day to assure safety and health including, but not limited to the playground, specialist classes, recess and lunch, et al.   
 
  • Maintain all classroom resources in an organized and intentional fashion commensurate with lead teacher and administrative direction.   
 
  • Participate in relevant experiential learning opportunities like field trips when necessary.
 
  • Assist in any special events, projects or duties as directed by Sierra Canyon administration.   
 
  • Help to maintain a clean, neat, and organized classroom, and promote healthy personal hygiene habits of students.  
 
  • Engage in other duties as assigned by the Lower School Director. 
 

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Experience working with elementary aged children in a school setting preferred. 
 
  • Experience working in an independent school environment preferred. 
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree and current enrollment, intent for, or completion of a teacher credential or Masters in Education
  • A genuine interest in pursuing a career in education.

  • Team oriented with the ability to work effectively with grade-level and divisional faculty and staff, as well as other members of the school, including the administrative team, other faculty members, parents, and students.

Salary Range: $40,000 - $48,000
 
Sierra Canyon School is a nonprofit independent, nondenominational, coeducational day school in the northern San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. With an enrollment of 1,150 students in Grades PreK-12, admission is selective. Sierra Canyon School is located on 42 beautiful, rustic acres and has two campuses across the street from each other: the Lower Campus for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6 and the state-of-the-art Upper Campus for students in Grades 7-12. Students of color comprise over 50% of the student body, 10% are international students, and students reside in 102 different zip codes. There are approximately 500 students on the Lower Campus and 650 students on the Upper Campus with 134 students in the Class of 2024.
