HBCU Alumni Speak to Upper Campus Students

In honor of Black History Month, many special events have been hosted on our campuses throughout February.

On Thursday, February 15, Upper Campus students had the opportunity to learn more about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) directly from a panel of three HBCU alumni who are also proud Sierra Canyon alums. Kennedy M. '16 (Spelman College), Royce W. '17 (Howard University), and Ross W. '19 (Hampton University) provided valuable insight into their educational journeys, highlighting the significance of attending an HBCU and detailing their transitions to HBCUs from Sierra Canyon. Black Student Union (BSU) presidents Lola B. '24 and Luke S. '24 took charge as moderators, facilitating an enriching discussion by posing insightful questions.

The alumni panel offered first-hand accounts of their experiences at their respective schools and discussed the vibrant campus life, academic rigor, and sense of community that defined their experiences. Kennedy emphasized the importance of representation and finding support networks, while Royce spoke about the cultural significance of Howard and its role in fostering leadership among its students. Ross shared anecdotes of personal growth and the transformative impact of his HBCU experience. Through their candid reflections, students gained a deeper understanding of the many paths open to them in the future. The event was a successful and enlightening way to continue the celebration of Black History Month at Sierra Canyon.

As February marches on, we look forward to more events and conversations that educate and empower our students. Be sure to check out the BHM Calendar of Events for details on these exciting opportunities to connect and learn at Sierra Canyon!
