Honors Engineering Students Impress with Semester Projects

Every spring, students in Dr. Rohrback’s Honors Engineering class are tasked with selecting, designing, and building a project to expand their knowledge and experience in a field of engineering.

Six weeks are devoted to the build, and a detailed lab report is submitted documenting the effort. No “kits” are allowed, and all work must be completed by the student. Past projects have included crossbows, soda fountains, electric guitars, a myoelectric prosthetic hand, and a nuclear fusion reactor (no kidding). This year’s projects are once again very diverse and speak to the individuality of the students in this class. They include:

  • Cyclone arcade game
  • Solar cell phone charging stations for student use on the Upper Campus Plaza
  • Fog machine complete with party lights
  • Shopping cart-contained collapsing bed and shower
  • Electric skateboard
  • Motorized three-wheel vehicle
  • Portable, low-cost analog ECG (electrocardiogram)
If these students can complete projects such as these in high school (especially under the conditions of this school year), just imagine what they will accomplish in the future!
