The New Upper Campus Obsession

In an age when our days are inundated with tweets and Fortnite, it is refreshing to see healthy habits being cultivated through non-digital sources.

Chess, over a millennium old and said to originate from different cultures in India, China, Korea, and Japan, is thriving on the Upper Campus. Just like its eclectic origins, it is enjoyed by all grade levels, has brought together students of disparate backgrounds, and is played all over campus at any point of the day.

There are many benefits of chess. It promotes processing speed, higher cognitive functioning, and strategizing. Plus, it’s fun! However, instead of reading an article about the connection between chess and neuronal development, take it from one of the best rookies in the NFL, quarterback Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals, who credits his success to playing the game from an early age. Click here to read the ESPN Kyler Murray article.

So if you haven’t already, encourage your child to put down his or her digital device and take up this enriching game of strategy and fun. There will always be the opportunity to play at Sierra Canyon.
