Four Upper School Students Take on AdCap Challenge

In February, Audrey Young ‘21 sought to lead a group of students to the annual UNICEF Summit in Maryland.

These thoughtful Trailblazers wanted to be inspired by networking with like-minded teens who care deeply about the world and their roles in it. Plans were almost finalized when the conference was canceled due to Covid-19, but this did not shut down their drive.

Audrey, along with Laura DeFalco ’20, Avonley Kliewer ‘22, and Lauren Nicolaysen ‘20, found that they could continue learning about and contributing to global human rights affairs by taking on the AdCap Challenge, a project-based opportunity for teenage students which seeks innovative solutions to complex problems. Of their motivation, Audrey remarked, “We were inspired to enter the AdCap Challenge because we wanted a voice. We wanted to feel like we could speak our minds during a time of isolation. We wanted to prove to people that we do not back down.

These four students took on issues of food insecurity by looking at local processes of food consumption and waste, and using Zoom as their new tool, conferenced and collaborated on meeting the AdCap deadline. It was truly remarkable how quickly they turned their project around and submitted their work. The girls are eagerly awaiting the results that include winners enjoying grants for future work on these important issues.

Congratulations to this team! Your resilience in making a positive contribution to the world despite these current challenges is an inspiration, and we look forward to embracing this opportunity again next year with even more SC students.
