Week of Giving Seeks Support for Two Deserving Causes

At Sierra Canyon, we have a set of core values that address the intellectual growth of our students. We also set a number of goals, one of which is to help our students build strong minds and kind hearts, and one way we do that is through a beautiful community tradition when we dedicate a week to think about and do for others—we call it the Week of Giving. This year it will take place from September 27 through October 1.

 

Our entire school (Lower and Upper Campus) will participate in two drives, and we hope that you will join us in assisting others. Team Rubicon responds to disaster relief and is currently assisting almost 10,000 Afghan refugees who are at Fort Bliss, Texas. First grade parent Cory Wenter (Emery ’33), Sierra Canyon Director of Safety and Security (and son-in-law of Robin Kerrigan, Executive Assistant to the Head of School), has been part of Team Rubicon for ten years, and he recently returned from a visit to Fort Bliss. Cory joined Sierra Canyon School in 2014 as a driving force in creating a rigorous and comprehensive emergency management program. He also served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps. It is very easy to be a part of this important endeavor. Please click HERE to see a list of needed items for the refugees from the Amazon Wish List. Once you make your purchase, the shipment goes directly to Fort Bliss and is handed to the recipients. Due to the urgency of the situation and the immediate humanitarian need, Team Rubicon is asking that donations be made by Thursday, September 30. You may begin making purchases right away.

 

Another undertaking at both campuses is collecting lightly loved shoes of all sizes for Shoes for Souls, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity started by Lindsay Sobel ’22, daughter of David Sobel, Assistant Athletic Director-Sports Information, and granddaughter of Howard Wang, one of the two founders of Sierra Canyon School. Lindsay began this project as part of becoming a bat mitzvah, but after learning of the tremendous need, she continued to collect and donate shoes, even throughout the pandemic. To date, she has distributed over 45,000 pairs of shoes to unhoused clients at various organizations including the L.A. Mission, MEND, Shoes for the Homeless, and Soles4Souls, among others. Lindsay has received numerous honors for founding this charity. Lindsay remains determined to make a difference in our community and knows that proper footwear is important, not only for health but also for dignity and self-respect.
