Giving Tuesday

Mary Mazzuca
Now, more than ever, we have an opportunity to help children learn about compassion and the significance of reaching out to others.
The importance of teaching children the impact philanthropy can make on society is something truly meaningful. According to the study, "Transmitting Generosity to Daughters and Sons," out of Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy, "adult children-both sons and daughters-whose parents give to charity are more likely to give to charity." Children look to us as role models and what it means to be part of a community and philanthropy is a tremendous way to share our values with our kids.

On November 27th, we celebrate Giving Tuesday across the country as a national day of giving back to the causes in which we believe. At Sierra Canyon School last year, we raised more than $250,000 during our Giving Tuesday campaign. Our community rallied around our students and showed them that giving back to their school was important for their future, as well as the future of their classmates. This year, I'd like to challenge us all to take Giving Tuesday a step further, and use it as a platform for teaching our kids the value of philanthropy as we head into a new season of giving.

1) Encourage your kids to think about the causes that mean the most to them. Whether it is taking care of animals, feeding the homeless or collecting shoes for those less fortunate, all kids should be encouraged to think about what touches their hearts.
2) Point out to your kids when you "round up" at your local grocery store or pharmacy by giving an extra dollar or two to a charitable cause. Let them know that every dollar counts when it comes to helping out. Participation is what matters.
3) When you see a named building, a brick engraved with the name of a family, or a park bench dedicated to someone's memory, let your kids know that the world is made a better place by the generosity of others. Without it we woudn't have beautiful libraries, support for artistic expression, smiles on the faces of children who just received a new pair of shoes or supplies for school.

This Giving Tuesday, as you are supporting the causes that mean the most to you, share that love of giving is a gift in itself.
