Recently, Sierra Canyon's Lower and Middle School communities came together in a shared commitment to something greater than themselves.
On the Lower Campus, students participated in The Aerin Project, a values-based letter-writing initiative created in memory of Aerin Rose Glaser, whose legacy of positivity inspired a program built on empathy and the written word. Over several weeks, 6th Grade students crafted heartfelt messages for their Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade peers, bringing them to life at a Big Four assembly focused on Respect. Jon Glaser, Aerin's father, joined the assembly to share the story behind the project, and students read sample letters aloud, giving voice to prompts like "Open when you need encouragement" and "Open when you're feeling proud of yourself." As the letters make their way into the hands of Lower Campus students, they serve as a reminder that their community sees them, supports them, and is rooting for them.
On the Upper Campus, Sierra Canyon's Middle School continued its long-standing tradition of community service with an 8th Grade volunteer trip to Big Sunday, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit founded on the belief that everyone has something to offer someone else. Students sorted more than 1,000 donated books destined for local schools, as well as three octabins of clothing, shoes, accessories, and household goods for My Friend's Place, another nonprofit serving those in need in the Los Angeles area. The experience reflects Sierra Canyon's belief that meaningful service begins with showing up and that young people are fully capable of making a real difference right now.
That belief is embodied by Brooklyn S. '27, Jesse S. '27, and Kennedy S. '27, who volunteer each week in Chatsworth serving meals to those in need, a commitment that grew, in part, from Sierra Canyon's own community resource efforts and one that has since inspired their peers to join them as well. "What inspires me to give back is knowing that when I do, someone who needs help gets it," said Brooklyn. When asked what advice she had for others, she added, "Keep trying to get involved, because no matter what you do, you are helping someone."
Across both campuses, Sierra Canyon’s culture of service reflects a deeper commitment to educating the whole child. Rooted in our core values and brought to life through experiential learning, these moments teach students that meaningful impact starts with action.
