Students in 2nd Grade embarked on their Producer/Consumer Unit, exploring foundational economics concepts through a hands-on, collaborative social studies experience.
In small groups guided by parent volunteers, students were given a budget and asked to brainstorm and decide on a kid-friendly product to produce and sell. After collecting the materials needed to make and package their products, students worked diligently in assembly lines to handcraft 75 of each item.
Once production was complete, students shifted their focus to marketing and advertising. Each group collaborated to design a poster promoting their product and created a commercial that they performed for their classmates. All 2nd Grade parents were invited to attend the event and celebrate the students’ creativity and teamwork.
The unit culminated in a celebratory marketplace that showcased all student-produced items. Using 'Second Grade' currency, students shopped for one another’s creations and proudly brought home the products they had worked hard to design, produce, and promote.
As an extension of the unit, students explored the concept of philanthropy and discussed the importance of giving back to the community. With nutrition as a key focus of the curriculum in Grade 2, students examined issues of food insecurity and learned about Food Cycle LA, a local organization dedicated to reducing food waste while nourishing people and strengthening communities. Many students decided to donate to this mission and encouraged family members to match their donations, reinforcing the idea that learning can have a positive impact beyond the classroom.
At Sierra Canyon, learning extends beyond the classroom to meaningful, real-world impact. Through collaboration, critical thinking, and a shared commitment to service, students developed skills and values that will continue to guide them as lifelong learners and thoughtful members of their community.
