This month, Upper Campus French classes celebrated La Fête des Rois, a January holiday traditionally observed in France, by learning about its historical roots and the many cultural traditions connected to the celebration.

In France, La Fête des Rois (Epiphany) is traditionally celebrated by sharing galette des rois, or King’s Cake. To bring this tradition to life, Upper Campus French classes enjoyed a lively classroom celebration and savored homemade galettes baked by Sihem Rabbani (Léah ’29 and Aiden ’30). In each class, the student who discovered the fève (King) hidden inside the cake claimed the crown and reigned as King or Queen for the day, sparking cheers and shared excitement among classmates.

“This celebration is a favorite among students each year,” shared Madame du Cos de la Hitte. “They always look forward to it with great anticipation—enjoying the galettes and eagerly hoping to discover the fève.”

Classroom traditions like this highlight Sierra Canyon School’s World Languages program, which enriches learning by blending language study with meaningful cultural experiences. By engaging directly with global customs, students develop a deeper appreciation for how language connects people, traditions, and perspectives around the world.
