Sierra Canyon School welcomed the Lunar New Year with festive celebrations across both campuses this week.
Lunar New Year is one of the most significant cultural holidays observed throughout Asia and by communities worldwide. The holiday follows the lunar calendar and ushers in a time of renewal, family gatherings, and honoring ancestral traditions. This year welcomes the Year of the Horse, which officially began on February 17—a sign associated with energy, freedom, and optimism.
The Lower Campus kicked off celebrations with an assembly showcasing the rich traditions of this cultural holiday. Sunny H. '35 took the stage alongside dancers from her studio to perform a traditional Chinese dance. Parent volunteers Michelle Liem (Emma '39 and Owen '38), Summer Bao (Devin '38 and Pax '37), Fifi Liu (Tiara '37 and Prince '31), Sherry Yin (Sunny '35), Judy Zhai (Joli '33 and Joy '30), Fang Li (Tony '33 and Daisy '28), and Yolanda Xing (Jocelyn '31) delighted students with a Chinese hip-hop dance, blending modern style with cultural celebration. The assembly reached its crescendo with a face-changing performance, a centuries-old Sichuan opera art form in which performers transform colorful masks in the blink of an eye. Students enjoyed fortune cookies as sweet treats to close out the festivities.
The Upper Campus continued the celebration during Community Time with a presentation hosted by the Chinese Culture Club. Laura S. '28 opened the program with a musical performance, followed by the parent volunteer group reprising their energetic Chinese hip-hop dance. Students experienced Chinese sugar-drawing demonstrations, an edible art form in which artists create intricate designs with melted sugar, and tasted these sweet treats during lunch. The celebration concluded with a vibrant dragon dance, bringing the mythical creature to life through coordinated movement and colorful fabric.
Cultural celebrations like these offer Sierra Canyon students meaningful opportunities to learn about and honor the diverse traditions that enrich our community. The School extends warm wishes for a prosperous Year of the Horse and thanks the Chinese Culture Club, the Chinese Heritage Parents Association, Susan Hsu (Taylor '28), and Cindy Gao (Nathan '27) for their leadership in coordinating these celebrations and all parent volunteers for sharing these beautiful traditions with both campuses.
