Throughout the month of January, 1st Grade students explored outer space through a series of engaging, hands-on science lessons rooted in STEAM learning—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

To build foundational understanding, students participated in a range of exploratory activities focused on space, including an in-depth look at the moon. They modeled moon phases with Oreo cookies and created take-home clay moon models, using various round tools to form craters and decorating their moons with astronauts and American flags. Students also experimented with straw rockets, testing speed and launch distance, and designed their own telescopes to explore the Milky Way galaxy.

As the unit progressed, students applied their learning through an engineering challenge that invited them to think like problem-solvers. Working to keep a ping-pong ball “astronaut” secure, students designed, built, and launched lunar landers using materials such as cardstock, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, straws, tongue depressors, glue, and tape. Designs were tested from heights of 3, 6, and even 9 feet.

“This project really allows the children to build and design something that is truly unique. The ideas and smiles were endless,” 1st Grade teacher Mrs. Gunny shared, “The excitement in the room was palpable as they tested their creations. It is a true joy to teach in this type of environment.” The unit concluded on a celebratory note, as students enjoyed double-decker moon pies together.

At Sierra Canyon, learning comes to life through meaningful, hands-on experiences that spark curiosity. This month-long STEAM exploration reflects the School’s commitment to experiential learning, where students are encouraged to ask questions, think creatively, and develop the skills needed to thrive as confident learners.
