On the Lower Campus, 5th Grade students held a themed Publishing Party, turning their classroom into the creative Starbooks Café.
Writer’s Workshop is a core part of writing instruction in Kindergarten through 6th Grade, guiding students in a process that builds skills and confidence. In each unit, students develop ideas, draft, revise, and edit. The structure fosters independence as students make choices, reflect on their progress, and take pride in their growth as writers.
In 5th Grade, students applied these strategies through a unit on realistic fiction, crafting stories with believable characters, settings, and events that could realistically happen in everyday life. As they wrote, students focused on building clear plot lines, developing character motivations, and using descriptive details to help readers visualize scenes and understand the emotions of the characters. At the Starbooks Café Publishing Party, each student proudly shared their final piece with classmates, practicing presentation skills and celebrating the work that went into bringing their stories to life.
Publishing parties are one of the many ways Sierra Canyon’s Lower School curriculum builds a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Steeped in rigorous academic standards and brought to life through dynamic, creative teaching strategies, Writers’ Workshop keeps students engaged as they strengthen skills while reinforcing that learning is a joyful enterprise.
